This is where it all started...
Historia semper costodibus murorum ipsum per definition
1842The birth of Schlossfrieder – Friedrich Oechelhaeuser succeeds his fathers (Jakob Oechelhaeuser) business and renames it – Fr. Oechelhaeuser Wacholder Brennerei & Co. The distillery is situated just below the Untere Schloss in Siegen, by the banks of the river Sieg, at Kunstweg 6. The Liqueur “Schlossfrieder” is now branded, and gets its name from the Schloss situated just above the distillery; plus the local steelworkers nick-name “Frieder” which is the main occupation in Siegen at the time. The official paper of the business transfer is the oldest remaining document regarding the history of Schlossfrieder. Most other items and documents were destroyed in the bombing of Siegen in the late 1944. This is why 1842 is established as the year of commencement.
1844The Schlossfrieder distillery started in a building outside the immediate Siegen city wall right on the very banks of the river Sieg. The river Sieg has its spring source situated in the southern parts of the (Rothaargebirge) mountain-range, and is classed as a nature-reserve area because of its rich fauna-flora-habitat. In early days this water supply was extremely important for the ingredients and energy-source for the Schlossfrieder distillery. Today the river Sieg is more of a pleasant and calm attraction in the immediate area stretching as far as 155km (96mi) in total with an average flow of approx. 52m³/sek. Its spring having an elevation of nearly 2.000ft. and flowing out into the river Rhine south of Cologne in Germany.
1857Friedrich Oechelhaeuser suddenly dies at the age of 40 and leaves after himself his widow Elisabeth and 10-year-old son Heinrich. She continues to run the business along with assistance from her nephew Gustav Klingspor. The Oechelhaeuser family and the Klingspor family were very interrelated through marriage in those days, so Gustav was reckoned as part of family as running the distillery. The Schlossfrieder magenlikör was a well-renowned herbal liqueur in Siegen already and was gaining in popularity further abroad. In those days Schlossfrieder had a alcohol strength of 45% Vol.
1878The natural inheritor to the Schlossfrieder family business, Heinrich Oechelhaeuser, chooses to pass it all on to his uncle Gustav Klingspor. A tradition was that only the owners of the distillery was allowed to know the secret recipes i.e. Schlossfrieder, which also has been upheld until this very day. It is in this year that the distillery is moved from Kunstweg 6 to Hinterstraße on the other side of the Castle Untere-Schloss in Siegen.
1882The original bottle is now upgraded and slightly more elegant and appealing, but still a stone vessel. Later in this year the Alcohol strength is reduced from 45% to 42% Vol. All production is still done by hand and offered a truly handcrafted Liqueur to the ever-increasing connoisseurs of Schlossfrieder.
1902The famous Alt-Siegen official signet is now registered and used on all products made in the distillery. (this view of the old Siegen town is officially known as the “Scheinerblick” from the famous painting made by Jacob Scheiner in the mid 1800’s) This signet is still in use on the Schlossfrieder label today. Schlossfrieder is once again changing the Alcohol strength from 42% to 38% Vol.
1921The owner of the Schlossfrieder distillery, Gustav Klingspor dies at a very old age and leaves no family behind him. The Company is passed on to an old faithful employee Johannes Einloft. As working for Gustav for many years, Johannes is just as eager to grow and further the future of the Schlossfrieder distillery at Hinterstraße in Siegen.
1928Johannes Einloft suddenly passes away, and the Schlossfrieder distillery is once again managed by the widow of the deceased. Lina Einloft runs the business successfully maintaining the heritage of the now well-renowned
Schlossfrieder liqueur brand.
1930The son of Johannes & Lina, Hans Einloft becomes the official owner to the company, and continues to steer the company toward further success. It is during this time that the Schlossfrieder is beginning to be filled into glass bottles rather than the old stone vessels. This time the Alcohol strength is changed to 35% Vol.
1944Hans is killed in the second world war. This year the entire distillery is destroyed in a bomb raid against Siegen. Only a few items are salvaged, including the old official document with the year 1842 when Friedrich Oechelhaeuser took over the company from his father and started the Schlossfrieder brand with its
1945WWII comes to an end and more than 50% of Siegen town lies in ruins incl. the distillery. But work commences immediately to rebuild and revive the Schlossfrieder.
194692-year-old Lina Einloft passes on the company to Heinrich Schneider, who now runs the company from the cellars of the Untere Schloss at Obergraben in Siegen. The Schlossfrieder distillery remains there until the former premises are rebuilt again, but keeps the cellar vault for over a whole decade to follow.
1951The Schlossfrieder distillery moves into new premises at Freudenberger Straße on the other side of the river opposite the Schloss, but Mr. Schneider keeps the cellar vault as a storage for a long time. Reviewing the history of the Schlossfrieder and the run-up until this moment, it is a miracle considering all events, that this wonderful mixture still is alive and going!
1957City council of Siegen university-town names a road, just over the hillside from where the first Schlossfrieder distillery was situated; “Oechelhaeuserstraße” in honour of Friedrich Oechelhaeuser Grandfather who was mayor of Siegen in the early 1800’s.
1969The Schlossfrieder Company is now taken over by the established Steinseifer family-business, who are already in the brewing industry successfully. A string of events take place in the following years i.e. moving to a purpose-built distillery plant in Eisern a suburb to Siegen City.
1970Schlossfrieder is now bottled in a more modern looking glass bottle with a new label look as well. Schlossfrieder is also being sold beyond the immediate Siegerland area into the neighboring counties and gaining appreciation to new connoisseurs further abroad.
1982Schlossfrieder is changing costume once again, and this time the Last change is made to the secret mixture in lowering the Alcohol to 32% Vol. and has remained so until this day.
1989The next generation Steinseifer now takes over the Distillery part of the business, having just passed exams as a meister in the art of distilling.
1991Mr. Steinseifer is furthering the Schlossfrieder heritage, and changes the legal status of the Oechelhaeuser distillery and turns it into a GmbH (Ltd.) Co.
