Heritage of schlossfrieder
Old secret recipe from 1842 In the university town Sieges, there lived a
prosperous family named Oechelhaemer (Freemasons). Who, since some time back
had a secret family brew of botanicals mixed with alcohol.
This was normal throughout Germany in those days — to maintain a certain level of
well-being at home most families made their own concoction of herbal mixtures, in •
German called: Rrkuterlikor. MCse thousands of variations of homemade tinctures,
either survived and became commercialized, or simply west into oblivion. Thankfully
Friedrich’ Oechelhaeuser started a family run distillery in 1892 named:
Fr. Oechelliaeuser Wacholder BrenWerei, and this is where the story begins.
Having a proven mixture at hand already, with the secret family recipe — he named It
“Schlossfrieder” magenlikor (stomach-liquor). Alongside the varied liqueurs prod.ed,
Schlossfrieder always seemed to be in liking regardless time of year or seasons,
throughout the decades to follow. The small Oechelhaeuser distillery thrived thanks to
its ever-growing circle of fSchlossfriederli connoisseurs. By the late 1800’s the
Schlossfrieder herballiqueur was famous in the whole Sieges area called “Siegerland”.
In those days Schlossfrieder was all produced by hand (truly handcrafted).
Schlossfrieder means “Castle-of Tranqiiilitn-And got its name from the old maiq
Siegen castle named: °stores-Schloss, where the first distillery was located, just below
the Schloss by the banks of the river Sieg. Siegen is a town, in southern Westphalia
province in Germany, in the surrounding county of Siegerland. It is in this region the
Schlossfrieder brand was to become the foremost Rrkuterlikor in the so-called “Alt-
The Schlossfriederbrand was never promoted to the larger market of the German
Reich, but instead the distillery produced for the other regions, and supplied them
with their own liquor mixtures. There is not much documented from the war era —
suggestions have been made that the entire distillery actually stopped production
during this period.
Shortly after, in the late sixties, the Oechelhaeuser Brennerei was transferred to the
Steinseifer family (already operating in the brewing field). In the following years a
string of reforms and changes took place i.e. moving the distillery etc.,and the
Schlossfrieder Was successfully improved as such. By constant refinement and
detailed follow-up in recognizing its wealth of heritage to become yet superior. The
old secret family recipe was always kept and regarded as tlie absolute foundation to
its sweet success — although slight improvements have been unanimously allowed to
refine and upgrade its ultimate taste and flavour. All this combined over a. vast
, length of time, has made Schlossfrieder what it is today. The mature and exquisite
‘ taste it endows in the palate of the person experiencing this wonderful elixir, did not
come by as through an accident that’s for sure! After all — this is the epic taste we all
